How our stuff gets to us

I like to think I live a pretty “local” life. I buy my fruit and vegetable at a farmer’s market and I shop at small businesses whenever possible. But the truth is, when I take a good hard look around me, most things I own don’t come from where I live. Not even the same country! My shampoo bottle, my phone, my favorite candy bar - even my suitcase was made somewhere across the world.

So the question is: How did it all get to me?

Most likely, by cargo ship! That is, ships constructed to securely carry standard-sized containers packed with nearly any items you can imagine, to locations all over the world...without losing anything along the way!

Located on the North Sea, the Port of Rotterdam is the biggest port in Europe, and is amongst the top ten largest ports in the world. It has been an important shipping hub since the late 1200s due to its central location on the maritime trade route.

Millions of tonnes of cargo are loaded and unloaded here each year, before being sent on to a final destination either by land or by sea.
