Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is politician and ex-wife of Nelson Mandela.
In 1955, Winnie began working at a local hospital in Johannesburg. After seeing the poor conditions most black South Africans lived in, she became involved in politics.
In 1957, Winnie joined the African National Congress (ANC) and met her future husband Nelson Mandela. They married in 1958, but were soon forced into separation when Mandela was sentenced to life in prison.
During her husband’s imprisonment Winnie was a powerful voice for women, and continued the fight against Apartheid.
After her husband’s release in 1994 the couple separated. Though they were married 38 years, only five of them were spent together. They divorced in 1996. Winnie died in 2018.
