Tulum was an ancient Mayan city located along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The city of Tulum dates as far back as the 500s, but was most active from 1200 to 1500 CE. Tulum was an important center for the Maya’s trade network which operated in Mexico and Central America. Artifacts found here can be traced from places throughout the region.

When Spanish explorers landed on the Yucatan Peninsula in the early 1500s, they brought along diseases that devastated the native population. The city of Tulum was soon abandoned.

Tulum is the third most visited archaeological site in Mexico after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza.
