Bahamas

The Bahamas is a nation consisting of more 700 islands. The Bahamas are located in the Atlantic Ocean 50 miles from the coast of Florida. Some quick facts about the Bahamas include:

  • During his first voyage in 1492, while searching for a short route to Asia, Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas. While the islands where already inhabited, he was the first European to reach them.

  • Until 1973, the Bahamas were a British colony. Today, they are an independent nation within the Commonwealth.

  • The total land area of the Bahama Islands is less than 6,000 sq. miles, which is about the size of the state of Connecticut.

  • The Bahamas is home to the world’s third largest barrier reef, after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Belize Barrier Reef.

  • Scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’s were filmed in the Bahamas.
