Zulu Warriors - Pongola, KwaZulu Natal
Day 28

Rather than our scheduled afternoon game drive, we were invited to a Zulu village in Pongola. We drove about 1 hour to a very remote part of Zululand (KwaZulu Natal). The roads were not paved and we passed very few cars on the way. This journey left me not knowing what to expect.

Each moment of this trip has been about immersing myself in the many cultures of South Africa. Today, we were treated to a tradional Zulu warrior dance. Dance is an important part of Zulu culture. Their dances celebrate weddings, were used to prepare men for a hunt, and to give courage to warriors before battle.

When we arrived in the small village we were greeted by big smiles and lots of children who gathered to see the dancing as well. At that moment, I wished I was able to speak a little more Zulu! I hope that on my next visit, I will be able to hold a steady conversation - a good goal to keep up my language study when I get back to the U.S.

The dancers wore traditional Zulu attire of animal skins and bright red fabric. I was in awe of their intensity, energy, and focus. With the drums pounding, each dancer performed a solo. In between solos, the entire group performed. This went on for almost 20 minutes. It was clear that these young men are incredible athletes.

I hope that you enjoy seeing a traditional Zulu dance. It was one of the most unique experiences I have had while exploring this country.

Enjoy!
