Even More South Africa Music
with Nathi Gcabashe

From Newtown, Johannesburg. In South Africa, I have been surrounded by lots of new music. Before this trip, my fellow explorer Ilana and I went to a Hugh Masekela concert in New York City. Hugh is a legendary South African musician. He was performing with several musicians and singers, one of whom was an up-and-coming artist, Nathi Gcabashe. So today, several months later, we were able to meet with Nathi in Johannesburg.

For our interview we met Nathi in a place called a shebeen, or township bar. Ilana and Nathi talked about being on tour and how he got started as a musician. It really is hard work becoming a popular musician.

Then, Nathi sang a song for us from his CD. Yesterday, I had bought a shaker for Ilana in the hopes that he would sing, though Ilana did not realize at the time that she would be the one using it. She will be the first to admit that she was not too good at keeping time. Nathi sounded great despite Ilana’s slight difficulty keeping the beat.

Before leaving, Nathi signed a copy of his CD for me. His music is not yet available in America, so this was a nice treat to bring back as a souvenir.

Go to the next stop in South Africa to meet Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

P.S. MORE OF OUR INTERVIEW WITH NATHI GCABASHE IS COMING SOON!
In the meantime, there is plenty to explore in South Africa, Part I and Shakespeare’s England.
