Photojournalism
with Greg Marinovich

In Johannesburg. Today, we met with Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist, Greg Marinovich. Last year, after our first trip to South Africa, I started reading The Bang Bang Club, which was co-written by Greg and fellow photojournalist, Joao Silva. This book is an account of the South African township violence from 1990 - 1994. A group of young conflict photographers captured this unrest with their cameras; and, Greg was one of them.

When I was reading The Bang Bang Club, what struck me most was the idea that so many people I had met and worked with had to live through this outrageously violent time. I kept wondering how they managed to survive. I had no idea that I would be filming an interview with its author less than a year later.

Before watching the videos, I think it is helpful to have a basic understanding of some of the political groups Greg mentions: ANC, PAC, AZAPO, and IFP. These groups were struggling against the white-minority government and apartheid rule.

This was the first time that our team had been invited into someone’s home. This came with a new set of challenges! For example, while I set up the cameras, Greg’s dog was more than happy to help inspect our equipment bags and cases.

After Ilana and Greg completed their discussion, Greg showed us some of his photos. I’m sure that flipping through these photos was particularly exciting for our new photographer, Marc Morris. Marc, a native South African, is an aspiring photojournalist and Greg is one of his personal heroes. He, too, has read The Bang Bang Club several times.
