Minding the Gap

To get around London we almost always walk or take the Tube. Today, we had a special permit that let us film and photograph our journey.

London has one of the best public transportation systems in the world. Taking the Tube saves money on taxi cabs and gasoline. It’s also one of the quickest ways to get around the city because you don’t have to deal with traffic.

Once you learn how to read the Tube map you are pretty much good to go! Every line is color-coded and the stations’ names are clearly posted, so it’s easy to navigate! I wish the subway in NYC was this easy. The stations also have fantastic names like Piccadilly Circus, Bakerloo, and Canary Wharf!

When we arrived in London, we purchased electronic Tube tickets called Oyster Cards. These cards were good for a week, so it was quicker than having to queue at a ticket counter every day to buy a paper ticket.

Everything on the Tube seems to run very smoothly. On the train platform there are electronic signs alerting passengers as to how many minutes it will be until the next train arrives. I was surprised by how clean the stations and the trains are kept. But my favorite thing about the Tube is the trains, themselves. They make this fantastic sound ‘zip’ when they enter and leave the stations.

A word of caution: When you get off and on a train you may here an announcement that tells you to “Mind the Gap.” This warning is reminding you to watch your step, because some stations have a gap between the train and the platform and getting your foot caught will mean trouble for sure.

Enjoy the ride,

All this travelling has made me hungry! Time for us to grab a quick bite!
