Inside Parliament with Simon Hughes
Day 18

I didn't know what to expect before meeting Simon Hughes. Simon is a Member of Parliament, which is a bit like being a Member of the House of Representatives here in the United States. I assumed that the interview would be rushed and that all politicians at his level would be a bit stuffy. Wow, I could not have been more wrong.

When we arrived at the start of his work day (8:00am), Mr. Hughes offered us a cup of tea and some fruit. It was a small office with work piled high, but had a great view of Big Ben. He shared the office with his assistants and interns, which impressed me.

Despite a very busy schedule, Mr. Hughes spent a lot of time speaking with us about British Government and how it differs from the government in the U.S. Simon represents the people living in the borough of Southwark. This is where Shakespeare's Globe, the Clink Museum, Borough Market, and even our hotel are located. It was nice to speak to the person who represents the part of London that has so many of the places we are visiting during this expedition.

Simon works with other members of Parliament and the Prime Minister to make the country and the world a better place. I especially liked hearing about what is important to the people he represents. He receives many letters from the people he represents asking for help and he works to answer each one.

I am very inspired by Simon. He encourages young people to get involved in government. It is important to have a diverse government. I hope that you will be inspired to help make your community better.

From Parliament,
