The White Tower
whitetower illustration

Built for William the Conqueror, construction of the White Tower began in 1078. This single, original structure was the beginning of the Tower of London. In the 13th Century, King Henry III had the building whitewashed. It has, since then, been called the White Tower.

The White Tower once served as the Royal residence. Inside, the Chapel of St. John the Evangelist is where the Royal family would have attended religious services. Today, the Royal armor is stored inside and can be viewed by Tower visitors, including that worn by King Henry VIII.
