A warrant is an official document or certificate. There are many types of warrants. Some are legal warrants and give law officers the right to arrest someone or search for evidence. Other warrants prove payment or give power to someone.

This warrant, signed by Queen Elizabeth I, was an order to John Fortescue who was the Master of the Royal Wardrobe. In this warrant, the Queen ordered John Fortescue to issue a newly appointed herald, Ralph Brooke, with his uniform, called a tabard. Ralph Brooke would have presented himself at the Wardrobe and been fitted for his ceremonial uniform. The tabard would have had the royal arms embroidered on it in gold thread to show the importance of the Queen.
