Vicar

A vicar works in the Catholic Church. It is another name for a priest or reverend.

During Shakespeare’s time, vicars would do more than just preach and give sermons. They also told the congregation, or members of the church, about current events. The vicars informed the people in their parish about wars and battles, news from the royal family, and other political events. Because many people during the age of Shakespeare could not read and write, the vicar was the main news source for the people.
