The Tower of London |
|
The Tower of London has almost 1000 years of history. It was built for William the Conqueror in the late 11th century. Over the centuries, more towers, a chapel, residences, and both inner and outer walls were added. The original tower, the White Tower, still stands at the center of the complex. The Tower of London has been a fortress, a palace, an armory, a prison, and even a zoo. It has been the home to monarchs and where traitors have spent their last days before execution. The Tower has held many prisoners. Some famous prisoners include: Sir Thomas More, Queen Elizabeth I, Guy Fawkes, Anne Boleyn, and Sir Walter Raleigh. Today, the Tower is home to the Crown Jewels and the Yeoman Warders.
