The Tower of London
towerhistory illustration

The Tower of London has almost 1000 years of history. It was built for William the Conqueror in the late 11th century. Over the centuries, more towers, a chapel, residences, and both inner and outer walls were added. The original tower, the White Tower, still stands at the center of the complex.

The Tower of London has been a fortress, a palace, an armory, a prison, and even a zoo. It has been the home to monarchs and where traitors have spent their last days before execution. The Tower has held many prisoners. Some famous prisoners include: Sir Thomas More, Queen Elizabeth I, Guy Fawkes, Anne Boleyn, and Sir Walter Raleigh. Today, the Tower is home to the Crown Jewels and the Yeoman Warders.
