Tower Green

Tower Green is the lawn at the Tower of London; it is where beheadings took place within the Tower walls.

It was a rare occurrence to be beheaded inside the Tower of London. Most people were beheaded outside on Tower Hill so that a crowd could watch. Beheadings on Tower Green included King Henry VIII's wife Anne Boleyn in 1536 and Lady Jane Grey, who reigned as Queen for less than two weeks, in 1554. A plaque marks the spot where these private executions took place.
