Tower Green

Tower Green is the lawn at the Tower of London; it is where beheadings took place within the Tower walls.

It was a rare occurrence to be beheaded inside the Tower of London. Most people were beheaded outside on Tower Hill so that a crowd could watch.

Beheadings on Tower Green included King Henry VIII’s wife Anne Boleyn in 1536 and Lady Jane Grey, who reigned as Queen for less than 2 weeks, in 1554.

A plaque marks the spot where these private executions took place.
