The Rose Theatre |
|
The Rose Theatre was built by Philip Henslowe in 1587. It was the first theatre to be built on London's Bankside, or the south side of the Thames River. Plays by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare were performed at the Rose Theatre. Because of the huge success of the Rose Theatre on Bankside, the Swan and Globe theatres were built nearby in the late 1590's. Sadly, these new theatres led to the Rose being abandoned due to lack of business, and was closed down in 1606.
