Thatched
thatched illustration

Thatch is a type of roofing that is used more commonly in the United Kingdom than anywhere else in the world. It is made by weaving together large amounts of straw, wheat, reeds, heather, or other similar plants. It has been used to cover houses and other buildings for centuries.

The newly built Shakespeare’s Globe in London has a thatched roof, but had to obtain special permission to get one. London had strict laws against thatched roofs. This is perhaps due to The Great Fire that destroyed much of London in 1666. Part of the agreement that allowed Shakespeare’s Globe to have thatching required the installation of water sprinklers as an extra saftey measure.
