The Globe Theatre

The Globe was a popular open-air theater located on the south side of the Thames River. Named the Globe after its round design, it opened in 1599. Many of Shakespeare's plays were performed here and Shakespeare was partial owner of the theatre.

In 1613, the theatre burned to the ground, but it was rebuilt very quickly. In 1644, the second Globe was demolished when the Purtains ordered that all the playhouses be pulled down.

In the early 1990s, Shakespeare's Globe opened just a few hundred feet from the orginal theatre. It was rebuilt using techniques and matertials that would have been used in Shakespeare's time and features the first thatched roof in London since The Great Fire of 1666. Shakespeare's Globe is still an open-air theatre and people from around the world see Shakespeare's plays here today.
