A copyright legally grants an artist, composer, or publisher to exclusively show, sell, or distribute a text, song, or piece of art. It protects the artist and the original work so that only the owner of the copyright may reproduce the work. The symbol of a copyright is ©. Copyrights are an important part of any document that is created. The need for copyrights began after the technology of the printing press was brought to Europe from China in the 14th century. By the 15th century, the mass production of printed works became popular and written documents were frequently reproduced by others besides the original author and without his consent.
