In 1922, a group of radio manufacturers and enthusiasts formed the British Broadcasting Company, simply called the BBC. This company helped make radio better and more popular. The BBC expanded to television and, later, a news website. Today, the BBC is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world. The BBC has 80 years of history and its purpose is "to inform, educate, and entertain" the public. In 1943, the BBC’s War Reporting Unit used radio to send news from the field. Post-war, radio became the main source of news and entertainment throughout the UK and Europe. 10 years later, the BBC televised the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. This moment in English history was viewed by an estimated 22 million people. The BBC has also created recent shows that are popular in the US and around the world, like The Office, The Weakest Link, Teletubbies, and Pop Idol (American Idol in the US).
