A citadel is a military fortress. Typically, citadels are built on hilltops. This provides watchmen or guards with an excellent view of the area so they can keep a look out for possible attackers.

The Citadel of Amman dates back to ancient Roman times. For many visitors, this is the first stop in Amman as it boasts spectacular, unobstructed views of the city.
