South African Languages - Mini Lessons isiXhosa with Ilana and Xolisa
Ilana began practicing isiXhosa with our Johannesburg guide, Cromwell. isiXhosa is spoken by Xhosa people. Ilana quickly learned how to make some of the ‘click’ sounds that can be heard when listening to isiXhosa. At our Cape Town hotel she had an official lesson from Xolisa. By this time, Ilana was a pro! isiZulu with Christopher and Jabulani Christopher had a isiZulu lesson with our safari ranger, Jabulani. Jabulani was an excellent teacher and even taught us a song in his language. Like isiXhosa, isiZulu has several ‘click’ sounds. My Afrikaans Lesson with Riaan After listening to Ilana and Christopher, I am glad I did not have to learn isiZulu or isiXhosa on film. Afrikaans doesn't have ‘click’ sounds. I am thankful that I did not have to learn the ‘click’ sounds, but I did give them a try. I am very proud that I know how to say ‘Hello’ and ‘Thank You’ in all three languages. During our short time in South Africa, I have heard many different languages. Be sure to try speaking these languages aloud, and you’ll see why I had some trouble! I hope you enjoy the videos below. Learning a new language is a great part of travelling to different places, even if you only learn a word or two! What languages can you speak?
