Zulu Warriors - Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal
Day 29
This afternoon, we skipped our game drive to visit a Zulu village in Pongola. We have been invited to see a traditional Zulu dance by a group of young male dancers. The village was about an hour from our safari lodge. Our trip started on main highways then led to dirt and rocky roads. Along the way we passed very few people. When we arrived at this rural village we were greeted by the dancers. They were dressed in animal skins and red cloths. There were drummers who kept a strong beat and a dancer who had a really high kick. Each Zulu dance means something. There are dances that encourage bravery during a hunt. Some dances are done to celebrate weddings. The dances we saw were those done by Zulu warriors. After about 20 minutes of dancing the group sang a couple of songs for us including the South African national anthem. There was no electricity in the village we visited and it got dark very quickly. Although we were having lots of fun with the dancers, we had to leave when the sun went down.
