Muvhango - South African Television
Day 7 (afternoon)

Today was a busy day. We visited two places. First, the ProjectExplorer team visited the set of a very popular all-black show called Muvhango.

Muvhango is a soapie, or soap opera, on channel SABC2. An interesting thing about South Africa is that they did not get television until the middle of the 1970s. This was because the Afrikaaner government believed stories on television could make people stand up against apartheid.

Muvhango was created by Duma Ndlovu. We met with Duma who told us all about the show. The story takes place in modern times. Muvhango represents the Venda culture and township life. They even have a Venda expert on the staff to make sure that they are representing the Venda people correctly.

Christopher spoke with a few actors from the show. He spoke with a woman named Nonkululeko who taught him about the work the cast and crew do for the community. Being good community citizens and role models is very important to the people at Muvhango. They give back to the community by working with orphanages and other charities.

We were able to visit the director’s booth and the set of the show. We had to be very quiet while they filmed a scene. Working in television can be difficult. A lot goes into each episode and Muvhango is on every weekday.

If you become famous, what might you do to help other people?
