Touring the Cape with Max du Preez
Day 24
What a wonderful last day in the Cape Town area. We woke up early for a 90 minute drive to a small town outside of Cape Town to meet Max du Preez. Max is a well-known writer who offered to show us some of his favorite places in this part of South Africa. Max met us at a little country bakery where we sat and talked over a cup of coffee. Then we piled into our van and drove about 30 minutes to our first stop, Cape Agulhas. This is the southernmost tip of Africa. (Many people think that Cape Point, at the Cape of Good Hope, is the southernmost point; that is not correct.) Cape Agulhus is where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. We all snapped a few pictures at the point where the two oceans come together. There is even a line and a sign that mark the exact spot. Max took us down towards the water to point out large chambers made of stone. He told us that these were ancient fishing traps. When the tide was high the waves would wash fish into the stone walls. When the tide went back out, the fishermen could scoop up their dinners with their bare hands. Max also took us to the beach at Cassiesbaai, which was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It was quiet and peaceful. There were only a handful a people around. I thought that this would be a great place for someone to come get inspiration or to think clearly. Maybe that is why Max likes this place so much. Max joined us for lunch, where we talked about his work in Africa. He has visited every country in Africa and had some really wonderful stories about travelling. Our final stop was the ancient fishing village called Arniston, before we said good-bye and thank you to Max. The drive back to Cape Town was beautiful, like artwork. We passed through mountains, valleys, and vineyards. We watched the sunset as we arrived back in Cape Town. Tonight we will pack up and get ready for our next adventure... safari in KwaZulu Natal!
