The Kraal Gallery
Day 20
“Kraal” is an Afrikaans word. It is a closed area that is used to protect cattle. The Kraal Gallery is a store at the Waterfront in Cape Town. It sells beautiful woven tapestries and artwork. It is called ‘Kraal’ because it is meant to be a safe place for the people who work there. We met Frank Daniels, who owns the Kraal Gallery, to learn about the artwork that is sold there. The gallery is not only a store, but also a workspace for women weavers. The women who work at the Kraal Gallery are trained and then employed as weavers. All of the women are working to support families. Frank started the gallery to help provide jobs to women with children. There are many people who are unemployed in South Africa. Thanks to people like Frank and places like the Kraal Gallery, these women are able to sell their art. With the money they make they are able to pay for medical care and education for their children. The artists weave bright patterns to create bags, rugs, and even slippers to be sold to customers who visit the Waterfront. Frank has found a creative way to help South Africa’s unemployment problem. He is also helping women learn skills that they can use to support themselves. The Kraal Gallery even has plans to begin selling the goods in America. I am inspired by people like Frank who are working to make the world a better place. What creative idea do you have to help solve problems that face people in your country and people around the world?
