Gary’s Surf School - Surf’s Up!
Day 13

It was our first official day in Cape Town! This morning began with a drive to the beach at Muizenberg. We drove along the coastline for about 45 minutes on some winding and narrow roads. We had beautiful views of the ocean and mountains.

South Africa is known for adventurous sports like surfing, shark cage diving, and bungee jumping. We decided that surfing would be the best option for us.

When we arrived at Gary’s Surf School, Christopher, Henry, and Meredith put on wetsuits and hit the beach with surf boards. They were given big boards called long boards. Gary gave them a lesson on land about balance and explained some safety rules. He even pointed out a watchtower that keeps an eye out for sharks. Surfing looked like fun, but after hearing about sharks, I was nervous for my team members.

Gary bragged that he would have our first-time surfers up in 10 minutes. I thought they had no chance, but Gary is a great teacher. Christopher, Henry, and Meredith were able to stand on the board with just a few tries. The ProjectExplorer team did very well for their first time on the waves.

After a few hours in the sun, we went to an area called the Waterfront. We found a shop full of gifts for our friends and families. After we made some purchases, we found a place to eat. With 6 people it can be tricky to agree on one place. There were lots of outdoor restaurants with great views of Cape Town Harbor. During dinner, we watched the sun set over the water.

Today was a perfect day in Cape Town,
