Fairview Dairy - The Goat Shed
Day 14
When I was in England last year, I got to learn about cheesemaking. That was my mission again today when we headed to Fairview Dairy. Fairview is located in Paarl, outside of Cape Town. This part of South Africa is famous for its grape vines and winemaking. Farming has created many jobs for the people in South Africa. At Fairview there is a goat dairy and cheese production plant. When we arrived at Fairview there was a funny little tower. A couple of the goats live in the tower and climb up and down the staircase that winds around the outside. We met a few of the friendly goats and one of them even licked the lens of our camera. A man named Chris took us on a tour of the dairy. We learned all about how cheese is made. It starts as goat’s milk, ages for up to several months, and is wrapped and labeled. Bruce, Fairview’s Cheesemaster, explained the different types of cheese they make. The best part was trying different types of cheeses with Bruce. Cheese is one of my favorite foods so this was a very special treat for me. We tried 10 different types. I think the Camembert was the best one. It was creamy, smooth, and very tasty!
