Leadership with Dave Steward
Day 15
Today, we met with Dave Steward. He is a former United Nations Ambassador and was also an advisor to former President F.W. de Klerk. Mr. Steward has been involved in many exciting events and major changes in South Africa’s history. He was working with President de Klerk when apartheid ended. Ilana asked Mr. Steward many questions about South Africa’s government and constitution. For me, it was very interesting to learn that while the US Constitution was adopted in 1787, South Africa did not approve their Constitution until 1996. Mr. Steward talked about the spirit of compromise and forgiveness at the end of apartheid. This spirit has allowed for the creation of a modern South Africa, where all people now have equal rights. I left thinking about the many changes that occured during Mr. Steward’s lifetime and how he helped to bring about those changes. Because of this, I am inspired to help change the world for the better. How would you help make your world and your own community a better place? Afternoon in Bo-Kaap After our meeting with Mr. Steward we visited a tiny neighborhood called Bo-Kaap. Most of the people that live in Bo-Kaap are Muslim. Here, all of the houses are painted with vibrant colors. We spoke with the friendly owner of a beautiful red house. He told us that houses are repainted each year during the religious time of Ramadan, when Muslim residents fast. This fasting is a symbol of cleansing their bodies and lives. Neighbors speak to one another about which colors will look best. Because pf this, no house is the same color as the one next door or across the street. It is fun to think that if I visit Cape Town again, Bo-Kaap will look different.
