Yebo, South Africa!
A Country’s Challenges

Africa is the second largest continent on Earth. There are a number of serious challenges facing Africa. This continent has more than 50 different countries, each with its own issues.

Here are some important facts and questions about South Africa’s challenges.

Fact: In South Africa, about 6 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. This is almost one in eight people.

Consider these questions: Is poverty the reason for so many being infected? Are there educational programs to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS?

Fact: The country has an unemployment rate between 23% and 25%. This means one in four adults don’t have a regular paycheck.

Consider these questions: Is the government to blame for poverty? Are schools giving students job training?

Fact: There are more than two million shacks in South Africa. These are households without plumbing or electricity.

Consider these questions: What does it cost the government to move people into solid housing? Is it important to eliminate these shacks?
