A New Religion
The Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon has more visitors than any other parish church in England.
This is the church William Shakespeare attended as a boy. It is were he was baptized AND where he is buried. We met with the Reverend Gorick to learn about the long history of this church. During Shakespeare’s childhood, there was great religious conflict due to different beliefs. Not everyone had the freedom to worship as they wanted. This conflict affected everyone living in England at the time. Reverend Gorick told us that it was once the law that everyone go to church on Sunday. During Shakespeare’s time the church was a place to pray, but it is was also where people gathered for important public events and to share news. Shakespeare was probably inspired by the Holy Trinity Church. In his plays, he wrote about religion. He wrote scenes in churches and graveyards, and created characters that were nuns and friars. Is there a place in your community that inspires you to write? Enhance your Shakespearean knowledge: Learn about the Church of England.
School is in session: Visit Shakspeare’s School. |
