A New Religion
Day 3
Today, we walked to the Holy Trinity Church. This is a very large parish church in Stratford-upon-Avon. We spoke to the Reverend Gorick about the long history of this church. During the time Shakespeare was growing up, there was a lot of conflict because of religion. This conflict affected everyone living in England.
Reverend Gorick told us that it was once a law that everyone go to church on Sunday. During Shakespeare’s time the church was a place to pray, but it is was also where people gathered for important public events and to get the news. Everyone who lives in the parish can attend church, be baptized, get married, and be buried there. The Holy Trinity Church is where Shakespeare was baptized and where he went to church as a boy. It is also where Shakespeare is buried. In his plays, Shakespeare wrote about religion. He wrote scenes in churches and in graveyards. He also created characters that were nuns and friars. It seemed to me that Shakespeare found a lot to write about at the Holy Trinity Church. Is there a place in your community that inspires you to write? Sincerely,
