School’s in Session
I loved school. So, I was very excited for today’s stop -- the King Edward VI Grammar School. We met Mr. Biddle. He teaches in the same room in which William Shakespeare may have gone to school.
In Shakespeare’s time, the school day lasted about 12 hours. Only boys were allowed to go to school. Girls had to stay home and do housework. Being a girl, this seemed very unfair to me. When Shakespeare was a boy, there was only 1 room for all of the students. If students misbehaved they would get a whack with a switch, or twig -- a rather harsh punishment. Back then, most of the lessons were taught in Latin. Learning Latin was important because it got you in to university. To be a lawyer, doctor, or teacher you had to know Latin. The King Edward VI Grammar School is still an all-boys school. But now, there is an all-girls school nearby. The school days are much shorter now. There are also many after-school activities for students to enjoy. Is there something you really like about your school?
