Shakespeare’s England
Flower Power

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet.” (from Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet)

A physic garden is a garden full of plants and flowers used as herbal remedies. Flowers, herbs, and plants were used to treat sick people during Shakespeare’s time. The Chelsea Physic Garden was set up to help teach apothecaries how to use these plants.

Michael Holland is a teacher that works at the Physic Garden. He showed us some of the plants that Shakespeare mentioned in his plays. Some of these are Belladonna and Henbane.

It is important to take care of our environment. Plants play an important role in medicine and in our lives. It’s our job to protect them. I left the Physic Garden thinking a lot about conservation.

From the garden to Afternoon Tea: An important English tradition that also relies on plants and flowers is tea drinking.

Tea made its way to England around the time of the plague. This is because people knew boiled water was safe to drink.

We had Earl Grey tea with milk and sugar. At tea time it is traditional to share snacks. We had finger sandwiches and scones with jam.

Fancy a cup of tea?
