New Place
Located in Statford-upon-Avon, New Place is the name of Shakespeare’s final home. It was once one of the largest homes in Stratford. Shakespeare must have had a very successful career in London as a playwright and actor to buy a house so large.
Some time after Shakespeare’s death, the house was sold to a vicar named Francis Gastrell. The vicar was unhappy with the number of visitors who came to see New Place, so he had the house torn down. Sadly, today, only a tiny bit of the foundation remains. Today, there is a beautiful knot garden where the house once stood. In a knot garden, plants and flowers create a fancy pattern. We walked around the garden and took photos before the other visitors arrived. What kind of home would you like have when you grow up?
