Day 6

New Place was Shakespeare’s final home. Sadly, it is longer standing. I think this was a bit confusing to me. Why would we visit a place that was no longer there? What would we film? We were lucky to meet Jill Pickles who is a tour guide at New Place. She told us the story of New Place.

New Place was once one of the largest homes in Stratford. Shakespeare must have had a successful career in London as a playwright and actor to buy a house so large.

Some time after Shakespeare’s death, the house was sold to a vicar named Francis Gastrell. The vicar was unhappy with the number of visitors who came to see New Place and had the house torn down. Only a tiny bit of the foundation remains today. Jill showed us a picture of what the house would have looked like.

Today, there is a beautiful garden where the house once stood. It is called a knot garden. A knot garden is an English style of gardening. In a knot garden, plants and flowers create a fancy pattern. We walked around the garden and took all sorts of photos before the other visitors and tourists arrived that day.

What kind of house will you have when you grow up?

No longer confused by New Place,
