William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564.

When William was in his 20's he moved to London and became an actor and a writer. After a long career on the London stage, Shakespeare died in 1616.

Experts and historians believe Shakespeare was the greatest writer of his time -- perhaps greatest writer that has ever lived.

His plays are performed all over the world today. Some of his most famous plays include:

• Romeo & Juliet
• The Tempest
• Hamlet
• The Tempest
