The Rose
rosetheatre illustration

The Rose Theatre was built by Philip Henslowe in 1587. It was the first theatre to be built on the south side of the Thames River.

Plays by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare were performed in the Rose Theatre. Due to huge success and popularity of the Rose Theatre, the Swan and Globe theatres were both built nearby in the late 1590s.

Sadly, these new theatres took most of the Rose’s audience away and the theatre closed in 1606.
