The Globe Theatre |
|
The Globe was a popular open-air theater located on the south side of the Thames River. It opened in 1599. In 1613, the theatre burned to the ground. And, although it was quickly rebuilt the second Globe theatre was demolished 1644. Many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed at the Globe Theatre. It was named the Globe because it had a round shape. In the early 1990s, a new Shakespeare’s Globe opened just a few hundred feet from the site of the original theatre. Just like the original structure, Shakespeare’s Globe is still an open-air theatre. Since opening, people from around the world travel to see Shakespeare’s plays on this stage.
