Sir Francis Drake was an explorer from England born in the 1540s. When he was about 12 or 13 he boarded his first ship as an apprentice. This began his long career at sea.

Drake was alive during the same time as William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I.

Drake is most famous for being the first explorer to sail around the world. The trip took 3 years. His expedition helped mapmakers draw the world better.

His ship was called the Golden Hinde.
