An apothecary is another name for a pharmacist.

During Shakespeare’s time, apothecaries sold and gave advice about medicine.

Before the 1800s, apothecaries were very important because they were skilled and knew how to help sick people. After the 1800s, doctors began to do most of the work of apothecaries.
