Shakespeare’s England |

The Beginning
I have looked forward to visiting William Shakespeare’s childhood home for a long time. That’s because we have something very important in common. He and I share the same birthday -- April 23rd!
This house, in Stratford-upon-Avon, is a good place to start our trip. During Shakespeare’s time, babies were born at home. So, this is the house where William Shakespeare was born. Both William Shakespeare and fellow writer, Christopher Marlowe, were born in 1564. Making it an important year in the history of English theatre. The house has been restored to look like it did when Shakespeare lived here. Our tour guide, Sallie, showed us every room and pointed out items in the house that give clues about the family’s way of life. The dishes on the table and the painted wall hangings are 2 items that show they had a good life. William’s father was a glove-maker and a leather worker. His shop was located in the house. There would also have been apprentices living in the house. Do you know if anyone shares your birthday? I think it’s fun to think about people all around the world who share my birthday and wonder how they celebrate their special day! Enhance your British Vocabulary: Learn what rubbish means. More tomorrow,
Follow in Shakespeare’s footsteps: Visit the Holy Trinity Church. |
