Shakespeare’s England
On The Record

The National Archives in Kew Gardens is where some of the most important documents in English history are stored.

First, we got to see the repositories, where these papers are kept. These rooms are kept at the perfect temperature and moisture to preserve the documents.

Then, we looked at some of the documents from Shakespeare’s time. We had to put on special white gloves, because hands with dirt, oil, and lotion may damage the paper. Holding a document from Shakespeare’s time is amazing!

We saw Shakespeare’s will, which is famous because he signed his name on it.

We also looked at Guy Fawkes’ signed confession of the Gunpowder Plot. While looking at these important papers, I understood why they are treated with such care. So much of England’s history is recorded on these fragile pieces of paper.

Visiting the National Archives made me think about how computers have changed the way we record important information. How do you think information will be stored a few hundred years from today?
