Cultural Crossroads: Jordan
Refugees & UNRWA

From Jabal Hussein Refugee Camp in Amman.

In Jordan, there are around 2 million Palestinian refugees. These refugees make up more than 1/3 of the total population of Jordan. Today, we visited a school located inside one of the refugee camps. The school and the camp is run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA for short. The UNRWA works to make the lives of refugees better by providing health care, education, and other basic services.

The school we visited in Jabal Hussein Camp was an all girls’ school. As we arrived they welcomed us with a song. There was also a small band and chorus that performed during our visit.

After our warm welcome, we met representatives of the school’s Parliament, which is like a student council. The school had recently held campaigns and elections. Each representative shared their campaign slogan with us. They also talked about their ideas for the school and the country. I was very impressed that these young leaders had so many ideas on ways to make their school and community a better place for everyone. I left feeling inspired that some of these girls may grow up to change the world.
