Excavation is another word for digging in the earth to find artifacts. Archaeologists study these artifacts to learn about history and past cultures.

Archaeologists use special tools to excavate. A trowel is sometimes used to slowly remove dirt. They also use small brushes and spoons to find small, fragile items.
