A citadel is a military fortress. Typically, citadels are built on hilltops. This provides watchmen or guards with an excellent view of the area so that they can keep a look out for possible attackers.

The Citadel of Amman dates back to ancient Roman times. Many tourists start their visit to Amman from the Citadel. This is because it has the best views of the city!
