Meet ProjectExplorer’s Junior Journalists

ProjectExplorer’s first ever Student-to-Student film series was produced by students at Mpontsheng Secondary School in Katlehong, South Africa. Katlehong is a township located outside of Johannesburg.

Having arrived in South Africa just 12 hours prior, Ilana Fayerman and Jenny Buccos, from team ProjectExplorer, were greeted by the entire school. The school day began with singing, speeches, and some traditional Tswana dance. Be sure to check out the video below to see how the students at Mpontsheng Secondary School celebrated the official start of their Student-to-Student program.

Who are the Junior Journalists?
Bafana Nhlapo
Puleng Maledu
Thelma Mdluli, Class President
Thembisile Mabunda
Tshidiso Mabote

Team ProjectExplorer asked each of these 5 high school students a few questions on Day 1. So that you may get to better know them, we have produced a short video. Find out about their favorite foods, their communities, and what music they listen to.

Their Story: Once Jenny and Ilana gave the group a crash-course in being an on-location journalism crew, our South African student team set out to tell their story.

The Mpontsheng Student-to-Student team has developed, researched, written, and filmed a mini-series on education in South Africa. Beginning with the 16 June 1976 Student Uprising in Soweto, this is the issue that they chose to share with you, their fellow South Africans, and students around the world.
