On Campus
For Part III of their series, junior journalist Puleng Maledu visited the campus of University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg.
While acting as the team’s on-the-street correspondent, Puleng spoke with recent high school graduates about the pressures of university life and potential imbalances in South Africa’s primary and secondary schools. During apartheid, white-only schools were also known as Model C schools. Even though apartheid is no longer, the term Model C is often used when referring to these government or public institutions today. These former Model C schools still tend to have better facilities than township schools. With first-hand knowledge of a township school education, this issue of imbalance was particularly interesting to Puleng. Like other students their age, who are preparing to transition out of high school, the Student-to-Student team was very interested in the adjustments that come with adapting to university life.
