South Africa, Part II |

Even More South Africa Music
with Nathi Gcabashe
From Newtown, Johannesburg. Our work in South Africa has been steeped in music. Before this trip, my teammate Jenny and I went to a concert in New York City to see legendary South African musician, Hugh Masekela. Hugh was performing with several other musicians and singers, one of whom was an up-and-coming artist named Nathi Gcabashe. So today, several months later, we met up with Nathi in Johannesburg.
The space we used to interview Nathi was set up to look like a shebeen, or township bar. Nathi talked about being on tour and his experience playing with some very famous musicians. Then, he sang a song for us from his CD. We had bought a shaker prior to the interview in the hopes that he would sing; though, I didn’t realize I would be the one using it. I must admit that I was not too good at keeping time. Nathi kept cool and clapped along to show me where to keep the beat. In my opinion, anyone able to sing for the camera while teaching someone how to be their ‘back-up’ musician is pretty talented. Before leaving, Nathi signed a copy of his CD for us. I’m already thinking about how many extra copies I should buy before going home to New York.
Go to the next stop in South Africa to meet Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. P.S. MORE OF OUR INTERVIEW WITH NATHI GCABASHE IS COMING SOON! |
