Johannesburg Stock Exchange
Day 7 (morning)

A busy day for the ProjectExplorer team...

We started the day at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) with Leigh Roberts, a reporter from CNBC Africa. This was new territory for some of the ProjectExplorer team so we read-up on some basic financial terms before our day began. Armed with our new knowledge, we learned all about South Africa’s presence and continued growth in the world financial market. To begin with the basics, South African currency is known as rand. 1 US dollar is equal to approximately 7 South African rand. Of course, the market is far more complex than simple mathematics; so, I have left it to Sarah and our expert for the day, Leigh, to explain some of the finer points of South Africa’s stock market and economy.

In addition to our time with Leigh, the Marketing Director for the JSE, Noah Greenhill, joined us and gave us a tour of the building. The JSE has incorporated traditional African elements into the building and its practices, including a large Venda drum that is struck when a new company is listed on the exchange.

Before our next stop, we spent some time in front of the ‘stock ticker’ or the electronic board that streams all of the world's financial information - very, very cool!

One stop completed but far from the closing bell,
