Touring the Cape with Max du Preez
Day 24

Today, we met Max du Preez, an important journalist in the legacy of South Africa’s reconciliation.   During the height of the Truth and Reconciliation Hearings, Max would appear weekly on a television program - Special Report on the Truth Commission - which highlighted that week’s painful, yet historic events.

Max is also a writer, documentary filmmaker, and a producer. He has visited EVERY country on the African continent and has an extensive knowledge of African history, politics, and culture. For me, it was an honor and a privilege to spend the day with him.

Max took us on a tour of parts of South Africa that we would not have otherwise seen. We visited the ancient fishing village of Arniston and explored the southern-most tip of the African continent, Cape Agulhas. Two oceans meet at Cape Agulhas - the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean - and from that bit of land, these waters are all that stand between you and Antarctica.

Max was solemn and introspective - he took us to what seemed to be his most reflective places, where sand dunes meet cliffs, and caves jut out over the bright green water. It was a perfect day to process everything we had seen and accomplished so far on this expedition.

Max identifies now mainly as a writer and, over lunch, he shared some of his current projects with us as well as his book titled Of Warriors, Lovers and Prophets: Unusual Stories from South Africa's Past. I think that several members of our crew will be visiting the bookstore to get a copy of this book before we head home.

Unfortunately, we had to say good-bye to Max shortly after lunch and headed back to Cape Town for our final night. Now, we just have to pack up our things and prepare for safari. Considering the number of gifts I have bought for friends and family, this is not going to be an easy task!
