Cricket with the Western Cape Cobras
Day 23
Newlands Stadium, the home of the Cape Cobras cricket team! Incidentally, this is where the World Cup will take place in 2010, so it was a bit of a thrill to walk out onto the green. After a few days of immersing ourselves in the history and struggle of South Africa, it was nice for the team to get outside for some much needed recreation and ‘playtime’. We did, of course, get some background information on the game and why it is so popular worldwide. Christopher got a first-hand lesson from two of the Cape Cobras - Henry and Dominic - on how to play cricket. I, myself, am still a little foggy on the exact rules of the game. It seems terribly confusing, but perhaps that is because, as an American, I have not grown-up attending matches or watching it on television. I wonder if South Africans know the rules of American football? Some of the rules and equipment are similar (from what I can gather) to baseball. I got to try on some shin pads (which are very hard for a short girl to run in) and also got to hit a ball with a cricket bat. It is a different type of swing than one would make with a baseball bat; it is more like a golf swing. It took a couple of tries, but eventually I managed to get a nice little hit. Christopher, however, hit the ball on the very first try. This was much to the surprise of Henry, Dominic, and the rest of the ProjectExplorer crew. Howzat?
