Shakespeare’s England
New Place

Located in Statford-upon-Avon, New Place is the name of Shakespeare’s final home.

Shakespeare purchased New Place in 1597. The house is located just a few minutes walk away from the Holy Trinity church and the school he is believed to have attended as a child.

After a successful and busy career on London’s stages, it is here, in 1616, that Shakespeare died. Upon his death, the house was given to his daughter Susanna his sole heir. Today, unfortunately, nearly all of New Place has been demolished. The only parts that remain are a section of the foundation and a well.

A vicar named Francis Gastrell purchased the house in the 1700s. By then, William Shakespeare had become very famous and people travelled to see his home. Apparently, the vicar grew irritated by the visitors and had the house demolished.

Today, there is a knot garden on the site. English gardens are incredible, and knot gardens are designed with intricate patterns and shapes. I wish I could have spent more time wandering the garden, but there are other stops along the Shakespeare trail for us.
